Sydney beach with disabled transport

Summer In the City – new accessible beach adventures await!

As we embrace the warmth of summer, it’s time to don our sun hats, slather on sunscreen, and revel in the joy of outdoor adventures. For many, a quintessential summer day includes a trip to the beach—a place of relaxation, sun-soaked sands, and the rhythmic melody of ocean waves.

However, for individuals with mobility challenges, the prospect of beach visits has often been limited.

The good news is that times are changing, and Sydney’s iconic beaches are now more accessible than ever! With the introduction of new ways to access the sand and the surf in Sydney, new accessible beach adventures await. You can add ‘’ Fun at the Beach ” to your Summer ‘ To Do ‘ list.

Breaking Down Barriers: Wheelchair Beach Hire and Beach Mats

Exciting innovations have paved the way for a more inclusive beach experience. Two game-changers in this regard are wheelchair beach hire and beach mats.  Now, adding “Fun at the Beach” to your summer to-do list is not only possible but also wonderfully inclusive.

Both wheelchair beach hire and beach mats require prebooking. To make this happen seamlessly, all you need to do is contact the council of the beach you wish to visit. For instance, for Bondi Beach, reach out to Waverley Council, and for Manly Beach, get in touch with the Northern Beaches Council.

Surf’s Up: Try Surfing with Disabled Surfers Association (DSA)

If you’re unsure about trying out surfing, fear not! The Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) offers a fantastic and supportive surfing experience through their “Come Try Surfing” days, held from October to March/April. With 19 branches across Australia, there’s likely an event near you. Just remember to register in advance for a day of sun, surf, and smiles.

3 Hot Tips for a Seamless Beach Day

  1. Plan Ahead: Before heading to the beach, contact the local council to check out the new accessible beach options: Check the availability of a beach wheelchair and the beach mat. Inquire about accessible parking, ramps, and pathways to ensure a smooth experience.

  2. Pack Essentials: Assemble your beach essentials, including a hat, sunglasses, water bottle, towel, and, if you fancy a dip, your life jacket or wet suit.

  3. Sun Safety: Slap on the sunscreen, embrace the sunshine, and dip your toes in the ocean. And, of course, don’t forget to say ‘GDAY’ to the dedicated lifesavers on duty—perhaps even snag a selfie with them!
