Sydney recently showcased its accessibility and charm by hosting 102-year-old Dorothy Smith, a San Francisco native fulfilling her dream of visiting all seven continents.
Partnering with Destination NSW, Yes Theory, and Qantas, Dorothy’s inspiring adventure highlighted the importance of accessible tourism in making travel experiences memorable for people of all ages and abilities.
Dorothy’s journey was shared with millions through Yes Theory’s popular YouTube channel, drawing global attention to Sydney’s inclusive visitor experiences. Her itinerary included a cruise on Sydney Harbour, an up-close encounter with wildlife at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, a tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House, and a visit to Bondi Beach.
“I loved visiting Sydney; it’s a beautiful city,” Dorothy shared. “The people are charming, the food is good, the scenery is just wonderful, and even the weather is nice! We saw koalas, the Sydney Opera House, the Botanic Gardens, Bondi Beach—and the people were all so nice and friendly!”
Sydney’s commitment to accessibility is not just about providing opportunities for travel but also supporting a significant market. More than a billion people globally live with disabilities, and in Australia, 4.2 million people have access needs.
Research shows that travelers with disabilities not only take more trips each year, but they also spend more on accommodation, tours, and activities compared to other travelers.
Yes Theory, driven by “seek discomfort,” met Dorothy in 2024 at a retirement village. Moved by her regret of never visiting Australia, producers Ammar Kandil and Staffan Taylor made her dream come true.
Dorothy’s story, as shared with millions around the world, is a testament to the spirit of adventure that can thrive in an accessible world. Her visit serves as an inspiring example of how accessible travel opens doors for people of all ages and abilities.
Sydney’s inclusivity and warmth ensure that every traveller, no matter their abilities, can experience its beauty and charm.
